Chapter 3 - The Corporate Threat

The light of our flashlights illuminated Nathaniel’s hollow, scarred face. He did not look like a ghost anymore; he looked like a desperate man who had run out of places to hide.

"You should have let it go, Arthur," Nathaniel said, his voice a low, raspy whisper that carried the absolute weight of his fear. "Caroline spent twenty-six years trying to protect you and Paige from what is inside that box."

"Who are you, Nathaniel?" I demanded, stepping directly in front of Paige to shield her from the man. "My wife told me her first husband died in a car accident before we ever met."

"That was the lie the Vance family paid her to tell," Nathaniel replied, taking a slow, cautious step into the vault room. "I was an assistant engineer for the Vance Logistics Group. Twenty-seven years ago, Caroline and I discovered that the firm was laundering millions of dollars of defense-grade material through their offshore accounts."

"When they realized we had the encryption files, they staged the accident. I barely survived, but they made sure the world believed I was dead."

"They threatened to kill Caroline and her unborn child—Paige—if she ever revealed the truth. So she made a deal. She agreed to marry you, a quiet government analyst, and live a silent, ordinary life in Bayside Heights to prove she was no longer a threat."

"But she kept the encryption key," Paige whispered, her eyes wide with a profound, breaking horror as she looked at the USB drive in my hand. "She kept the proof."

"Yes," Nathaniel said, pointing toward the manila envelope. "The files on that drive contain the complete transaction history of the Vance family’s illegal operations. They’ve been searching for it for decades."

Suddenly, the high-pitched whine of a security siren began to echo through the basement, the red emergency lights of the vault room flashing rapidly.

The heavy steel security doors of the vault began to slide shut, their gears grinding loudly against the concrete.

"They tracked my phone, Arthur!" Nathaniel panicked, looking toward the closing exit. "They’re here! Julian Vance's security team is already inside the building!"

I grabbed the manila envelope and the USB drive, shoving them into my jacket pocket.

"We need to move!" I shouted, grabbing Paige’s hand as we scrambled toward the narrowing gap of the safety door.
