Chapter 4 - The Sovereign Alliance

The cool autumn wind off the harbor swept through the open plaza of the federal courthouse, clearing away the lingering dust of our nightmare.
Three months had passed since the terrifying night inside the abandoned vault of Bayside Trust. The legal proceedings had moved with a swift, mathematical precision that left no room for high-society influence or corporate bribes.
The digital encryption files on my wife's USB drive had been verified by the federal treasury's forensic division. Julian Vance and his mother, Victoria, had been arrested at their penthouse suite, their empire of fraud and treason completely dismantled by the law.
They were currently awaiting trial in a federal maximum-security facility, their assets frozen, their luxury cars sold at public auction to fund a new veterans' charity in the valley.
I stood on the stone steps, wearing a clean civilian suit, the silver medallion resting securely around my neck. The hidden compartment was empty now, the key and the paper having done their final, glorious work of justice.
Paige stood beside me, her eyes bright and clear, her hand resting warmly in mine. She had spent the last three months working with the federal investigators to restore the funds Julian had stolen from her mother's trust.
"We did it, Dad," she said softly, a true, unconditional smile finally appearing on her face. "Mom’s legacy is clean."
"Yes, Paige," I replied, looking out at the peaceful blue waters of the harbor. "She didn't just hide a secret; she built a fortress of protection for us."
Nathaniel Brooks walked down the plaza steps toward us, his face no longer pale or terrified. He wore a simple, clean suit, his legal status in the country fully restored by the federal court.
"The judge just signed the final restoration decree, Arthur," Nathaniel said, offering a warm, respectful hand. "The Vance family will never be able to touch your family again."
"Thank you, Nathaniel," I said, shaking his hand with a deep, silent gratitude. "For keeping her secret, and for helping us finish the war."

We walked down the steps together, the afternoon sun breaking through the clouds, casting a golden light across our path.
The old fears were buried in the dirt of the court, the independent fortress was built, and our real, honest life had just officially begun.
