Chapter 2 - The Tactical Reversal

The silence that fell over the grand foyer was sudden, absolute, and utterly terrifying.
Gloria’s hand remained frozen mid-air, her fingers trembling as she slowly turned her head toward the door.
Tessa dropped the digital tablet onto the bench, the screen cracking against the polished wood with a sharp snap.
Marcus stood up from the velvet sofa so quickly that his glass of high-end bourbon spilled across his expensive trousers.
Daniel didn't look at his mother, nor did he acknowledge his sister’s sudden, gasping panic.
He stepped into the hallway, his heavy combat boots clicking with a slow, lethal rhythm against the marble.
He knelt down beside me, his large hands incredibly gentle as he wiped the smear of blood from my bottom lip.
"Are you alright, Clara?" he asked, his voice a low baritone that vibrated with a dangerous, controlled rage.
"I'm fine, Daniel," I whispered, clutching his sleeve as the federal investigators moved past us to secure the room.
The lead investigator, Special Agent Vance, stepped directly in front of Gloria, producing a official document.
"Gloria Mercer, you are currently under federal investigation for grand larceny, extortion, and corporate fraud," Vance stated.
"Step away from the table and place your hands where I can see them immediately."
Gloria stumbled backward, her signature pearl necklace clinking loudly against her collarbone.
"Daniel! What is the meaning of this absolute madness?" she shrieked, her voice losing all of its high-society elegance.
"We were just trying to protect your assets from this plain, deceitful girl while you were away!"
"She was draining your military accounts, Daniel! We have the photographic proof right here on the tablet!"
Daniel stood up, his towering frame casting a dark, inescapable shadow over his mother.
"The only accounts being drained are the military logistical funds you and Marcus have been siphoning for two years," Daniel said coldly.
"I wasn't deployed halfway across the world for the last three weeks, Mother."
"I was sitting in a secure federal facility in Washington, auditing the supply chain records you managed."
Marcus tried to move toward the rear service exit, but two armed investigators instantly blocked the corridor.
"Mr. Mercer, do not attempt to alter your position," the second agent warned, his hand resting on his sidearm.
"The grand jury signed the warrants for your immediate arrest at noon today."
Tessa began to cry, her arrogant composure completely evaporating as she realized the trap had snapped shut.
"Daniel, please, we're family!" she begged, reaching out toward her brother. "Marcus forced us into the paperwork!"
"Family doesn't break into my home and strike my wife, Tessa," Daniel replied, his voice devoid of any human sympathy.

He turned to Agent Vance, his jaw locked tight into a rigid line of absolute military discipline.
"Process the suspects, Agent. I want every single piece of data removed from this house."
