Chapter 3 - The Audit of Treason

The sound of the federal vehicles idling in the driveway cut through the dark, cold night air.
Gloria and Marcus were escorted out of the grand foyer in heavy steel handcuffs, their loud arguments fading into the storm.
Tessa followed behind them, her head bowed in pure, unadulterated humiliation as the neighbors watched from their lawns.
The elegant house was quiet again, but the structural damage to our family tree was entirely permanent.
Daniel walked into the kitchen, returning with a clean, damp cloth to properly treat the rising bruise on my cheek.
"I should have come home sooner, Clara," he said softly, his eyes filled with a profound, aching regret.
"I knew Marcus was handling the logistical contracts poorly, but I never imagined they would bring the violence to you."
"They believed they were completely untouchable, Daniel," I explained, leaning my head against his shoulder.
"They thought your deployment was an absolute shield that allowed them to rewrite the legal deeds of this estate."
"They didn't realize that a data analyst looks at the ledger every single night."
I pulled my personal laptop from the kitchen cabinet, opening the secure, encrypted folder I had built weeks ago.
While Gloria was planning her dark family victory, I had been systematically mapping their entire financial matrix.
Marcus had been using Daniel's official military credentials to authorize fake equipment shipments through the port.
The money—totaling nearly six million dollars—had been routed directly into a private shell company owned by Gloria.
"Look at the last transaction routing number, Daniel," I said, pointing to the glowing digital screen.
The funds hadn't just been spent on high-end bourbon, designer silk blouses, or country club memberships.
The final transfer had been sent to a political action committee managed by the local district attorney.
Gloria had been systematically buying legal protection in the city to ensure no local investigation could ever touch them.
"That's why they wanted the deed to this house so desperately tonight," Daniel realized, his blue eyes narrowing.
"They needed a physical asset located outside the federal jurisdiction to use as collateral for the final DA payment."
"If I had signed that folder, the estate would have been legally transferred to their shell company by midnight," I added.
"And the local police would have validated the transfer based on the fabricated infidelity files."
The front door opened again, and Agent Vance stepped back into the kitchen, holding a secure black briefcase.
"Colonel Albright, we’ve secured the digital network servers from Marcus's office downtown," Vance reported.

"The data matches Mrs. Albright's ledger perfectly, but we found a secondary encrypted file labeled Sanctuary."
"It was compiled by your father before his passing three years ago."
