Chapter 4 - The Clean Slate

The morning sun broke through the heavy autumn clouds over Bayside Heights, casting a brilliant, warm light over the estate.
The grand iron gates of the mansion stood open, but the luxury vehicles and high-society guests were completely gone.
Instead, three massive yellow commercial bulldozers and two heavy excavators with hydraulic claws stood idling on the gravel driveway.
The fleet belonged to Vance-Clark Industrial—the construction division of my tactical logistics conglomerate.
Simon, my lead project manager, stood near the front porch with a clipboard, his team already capping the utility lines at the street main.
"The perimeter is fully cleared, Chief Executive," Simon reported, snapping his hand into a respectful salute.
"The interior salvage team has retrieved every single personal item belonging to your wife and son."
"The structure is fully cleared for immediate mechanical demolition."
I walked down the stone pathway, holding Sarah’s hand tightly in mine, while Jamie sat safely on my shoulder.
My mother and sister stood near the perimeter fence, escorted by two federal marshals who had allowed them to watch the final execution of my wrath.
They were dressed in gray prison jumpsuits, their expensive designer clothes and diamond jewelry having been seized as state evidence.
"John, please! You can't tear down the mansion!" Gertrude screamed through the iron bars, her voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic panic.
"It’s worth three million dollars! It’s your inheritance! You're destroying your own wealth!"
"The wealth was built on my family's hunger, Gertrude," I called out, my voice carrying clearly over the roar of the diesel engines.
"And a house built on that kind of poison is not a home; it’s a monument to your greed."
"I don't need this brick to prove my success. I have the only legacy that matters standing right beside me."
I raised my hand, giving Simon the final command signal.
The giant metal blade of the lead bulldozer struck the reinforced brick pillars of the grand entryway with a deafening, metallic crash.
The massive crystal chandeliers fell through the ceiling, smashing into a million tiny, useless pieces on the marble floor.
The seven-bedroom mansion, which my family had used to isolate and abuse my wife, collapsed into a pile of dust and twisted steel within less than an hour.
"The site will be fully leveled and turned to gravel before the sun sets, Clara," Simon reported, writing down the final status.
"And the blueprints you designed for the new community pediatric center have been approved by the municipal planning board."
"We will begin the foundation pour on this exact spot tomorrow morning."
I looked at Sarah, a true, warm smile finally appearing on her beautiful face as the dust cleared away in the wind.
The memory of the spoiled rice and the dark service kitchen was gone, replaced by the clean, honest light of a brand new future.

The thieves who had tried to sacrifice my son’s life for their high-society vanity were heading to a federal prison for the rest of their natural lives.
The corporate wars were won, the legacy was perfectly clean, and our real family life had just officially begun.
