Chapter 2 - The Tactical Pivot

The hospital room was bright.
Sterile.
Safe.
I lay in the bed.
Monitors beeped softly.
My father sat nearby.
He held a cup of coffee.
"He's in custody," he said.
"And Linda?" I asked.
"She's being processed."
"The evidence?"
"It's overwhelming."
I touched my belly.
The baby was safe.
That was all that mattered.
"You were listening," he said.
"The whole time."
I nodded.
"I kept the phone hidden."
"Recording everything."
"Every threat," he mused.
"He was arrogant."
"He thought I was broken."
I looked at the window.
The city lights were distant.
"I wasn't broken," I said.
"I was waiting."
My father smiled.
It was a proud look.
"You have your mother's spine."
"And your tactical mind."
He stood up.
"The lawyers are ready."
"They want to press charges."
"Full extent of the law."
I took a deep breath.
"Good."
"I want everything."
"I want them ruined."
The vulnerability was gone.
Replaced by a cold fire.
They had used my love.
They had used my child.
Now, I would use them.
"They'll try to lie," I said.
"They'll claim it was an accident."
"They'll say I fell."
My father patted my hand.
"The audio says otherwise."
"And the medical report."
"It's irrefutable."
I relaxed against the pillows.
The weight was finally lifting.
I wasn't just a survivor.
I was a witness.
I was a judge.
I was a juror.
I was the executioner.
Ryan had wanted a wife.
He had wanted a prisoner.
He had built a cage.
But he had forgotten one thing.
A soldier's daughter.
Always escapes.
I reached for my phone.
I checked the timestamp.
The recording was uploaded.
To the cloud.
To my father.
To the police.
It was everywhere.
They couldn't delete it.
They couldn't silence it.
The truth was public.
And it was screaming.
I closed my eyes.
The exhaustion hit me.
But it was sweet.
For the first time in months,
I could breathe.
May you like
The battle was moving forward.
And I would win.
