Plot twist

Chapter 3 - The Legal Siege

The courtroom was packed.

Media.

Reporters.

Public interest.

The case was a firestorm.

A colonel's daughter.

A violent husband.

A hidden abuse case.

I sat in the chair.

I wore a simple dress.

I looked composed.

My father sat behind me.

A pillar of granite.

Ryan was in the dock.

He looked haggard.

Unshaven.

Desperate.

His lawyers were sweating.

They knew the audio.

They knew the truth.

The prosecutor stood up.

He played the tape.

The courtroom fell silent.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

"Get up, useless woman!"

The sound of a slap.

My own soft crying.

"I'm sorry, Ryan!"

The room was horrified.

Some jurors looked away.

Others glared at him.

Ryan sat motionless.

He didn't look at me.

He couldn't.

He was being destroyed.

The prosecutor paused the tape.

"Is this the defendant's voice?"

"Yes," I whispered.

"And the woman?"

"Me."

"And your state of mind?"

"I was terrified."

"I was trapped."

He stepped closer.

"Did they threaten the baby?"

I choked back a sob.

"Yes."

"They said I'd lose him."

"If I spoke."

"If I moved."

"If I breathed."

I saw Ryan flinch.

He wasn't a hero anymore.

He wasn't a husband.

He was a monster.

Exposed.

Caught.

The trial lasted days.

Each day a new layer.

The financial control.

The isolation.

The psychological torture.

It was methodical.

It was calculated.

They had tried to erase me.

But they had failed.

I had kept the records.

I had kept the logs.

I was a historian.

Of my own abuse.

And now, a historian.

Of their fall.

I looked at Linda.

She was crying now.

Real tears.

Selfish tears.

She wasn't sorry for me.

She was sorry for her.

She was losing her life.

She was losing her status.

Good.

She deserved the ruin.

I felt a surge of strength.

This was the end.

This was the closure.

The trial was a mirror.

May you like

And they didn't like.

What they saw.
