Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Network

The hospital room felt smaller with every passing hour. The scent of white lilies heavy in the air was a constant, suffocating reminder of what my family intended for me. But while they saw a broken victim confined to a bed, my mind was operating with absolute, cold precision.

They had underestimated one fundamental truth: I built Greystone’s digital infrastructure. I knew every backdoor, every automated redundancy, and every fail-safe because I had designed them myself.

At 2:00 AM, when the night nurse completed her rounds, I carefully pulled the IV line from my arm and stood up. Pain flared across my legs and shoulder, but I pressed my lips together and forced myself toward the locker. Inside sat my personal laptop, sealed in a tamper-evident bag that the police had logged as non-critical evidence.

My right hand was heavily bandaged, but my left hand was mobile enough. I bypassed the standard biometric reader using an encrypted secondary passkey routed through a remote server I maintained outside the company’s network.

Within minutes, I was inside Greystone's primary audit portal.

What I found made my blood run cold. Asher hadn't just requested temporary succession files; he had initiated an automated override of the company's master equity ledger. He was preparing to transfer forty percent of Greystone’s liquid reserves into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands the moment the board vote concluded.

Then I checked the secondary cloud cache tied to Nadine’s phone.

Nadine believed she had deleted the video from her local device after showing it to Asher. What she didn't realize was that Greystone’s corporate devices were hardwired into an automated background synchronization protocol I had implemented six months prior for compliance security.

Every second of her video—her smiling face, the flames curling around my SUV, my mother checking her watch, and the clear audio of their conversation—had been cached to a secure, isolated compliance server.

I downloaded the raw file and mirrored it across three independent secure drives.

They thought they were walking into a coronation in two days. In reality, they were walking straight into a digital trap.
