Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of an Empire

By the time we reached the reception, the news had begun to spread like wildfire.

The Mercer Foundation was officially under federal investigation.

Vivian’s face, usually reserved for gala invitations, was now plastered across every news site in the city.

The guests didn't know the specifics, but the atmosphere was thick with the scent of scandal.

I stood at the head of the room, listening as a close family friend approached Ethan.

“Is everything alright?” the man asked, his eyes darting to the entrance.

Ethan didn't blink.

“Everything is exactly as it should be.”

I retreated to a quiet corner, opening my laptop to monitor the surge in data.

Every fraudulent transfer I had tracked was now being cross-referenced by the investigators.

The shell companies Vivian had used to siphon funds were being liquidated in real-time.

It wasn't just a bankruptcy; it was the total erasure of her influence.

I remembered the days of chemotherapy, the nights spent in fear, and the way she had looked at me with such calculated cruelty.

She had fought me with lies.

I was fighting her with the truth.

I saw the way the other board members were distancing themselves, their hands visibly shaking as they realized they might be implicated.

They had enjoyed the benefits of her fraud for years.

Now, they were going to pay the price of their silence.

The champagne flowed, but the celebration had lost its veneer of artificial perfection.

It was a wake, not for my marriage, but for a dynasty built on greed.
