Chapter 4 - The Final Verdict

The sun set behind the city skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the ballroom floor.

The final report hit my inbox just as the DJ played the final song.

Vivian Mercer had been taken into custody.

The Mercer Foundation was officially dissolved.

I closed my laptop, the screen reflecting my own composed expression.

I felt no triumph, only a deep, profound sense of peace.

Ethan walked toward me, his hands extended.

“It’s done,” he said, his voice soft.

I took his hands, looking into his eyes and seeing the man who had loved me through the needles, the fatigue, and the fear.

“It’s over,” I agreed.

We walked out of the ballroom, leaving the crowd behind.

Outside, the city was alive with the hum of midnight traffic.

I wasn't the woman who had entered that church that morning.

I was someone new, someone who had learned that the truth was the only weapon that mattered.

Vivian thought she had destroyed me, but she had only succeeded in stripping away the things that didn't matter.

I touched the smooth, cold surface of my head.

I felt beautiful.

We drove through the streets, the darkness no longer a source of fear, but a canvas for our future.

The cancer was still something I had to fight, but Vivian Mercer would never be a part of that battle again.

I had reclaimed my life, my husband, and my peace.

The empire of lies had fallen, and in the debris, I had finally found myself.
