Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Chicago Deception

By 4:00 the following morning, the quiet mountain valley was left behind as Marco's personal armored transport traveled north toward the Illinois state line.
Mila and Leo were sleeping peacefully on the leather bench seats, wrapped in the heavy wool coats Marco’s security team had provided.
I sat across from my husband, the metal lockbox resting between us on the low table, the true legal documents laid flat under the dim reading light.
Marco read through the handwritten letters from my sister, his jaw tightening into a granite line as the scale of the forgery was laid bare.

"And your father-in-law's legal counsel cleared the probate within forty-eight hours because they believed the syndicate would collapse without the liquidity."
"She didn't just steal the company, Marco," I said, looking out the dark window at the passing highway lights. "She tried to erase my children before they could even draw their first breath."
"The medical logs she filed in Chicago state that I was checked into the clinic under an alias, treating an unverified psychological condition."
"She wanted to ensure that if I ever came back, the courts would view my story as the delusions of a fractured mind."
Marco reached across the table, his hand catching mine with a firm, protective warmth I hadn't felt in three long years.

"The story ends tomorrow, Elena," he whispered, his gold gaze filled with a cold, terrifying promise.
"We are going back to the mansion. And she is going to discover exactly what happens when the Ghost of Chicago finds out he's been mourning a living woman."
