Chapter 7 - The Sweet Taste of Long-Awaited Peace

Six months later, the smell of fresh cinnamon, warm bread, and hot coffee filled the grand kitchen of the newly renovated Bellini estate in Chicago.

Pike’s Bakery hadn't been abandoned; we had relocated the entire operation to the city center, turning the local brand into a highly successful network that employed vulnerable women from the regional shelter system.

Brittany had accepted a plea bargain that resulted in a ten-year sentence at the state correctional facility, her pink silk dresses permanently replaced by the uniform of the state.

The logistics network was running under our joint leadership, the corporate assets safely secured inside a permanent trust fund registered entirely under Mila and Leo’s names.

I stood by the large double doors leading out to the sunlit terrace, watching Marco chase the twins through the green lawns, his loud, boisterous laughter filling the morning air with a warmth that had been missing for three long years.

Leo stopped running, his amber eyes catching mine as he waved a bright green toy dinosaur toward the window.

Mila ran up to her father, her dark curls bouncing as Marco lifted her onto his shoulders, his hands steady, calm, and entirely free from the tremors that had shaken him on my porch in West Virginia.

The sister who had tried to erase my existence was gone, her greed locked behind iron bars, while the husband I thought I had lost forever was finally, beautifully, standing right where he belonged.

I pulled the kitchen door closed, stepping out into the warm summer sun to join my children, knowing the dangerous world we had left behind was finally, beautifully, at peace.
