Chapter 3 - THE GALA OF HIDDEN GHOSTS

The grand ballroom of the Winchester Plaza was a breathtaking monument to high-society luxury, the air thick with the suffocating scent of fresh pine and old money.

Under the towering crystal chandeliers, New York’s most prominent corporate magnates raised their glasses to celebrate the annual Bennett Charity Gala.

On the surface, it was a celebration of holiday spirit, a beautiful winter performance designed to showcase the immense wealth of the Bennett logistics empire.

A glamorous socialite in a glittering, custom-tailored silver sequined evening gown danced joyfully near the grand staircase, her arms raised as the orchestra played a lively waltz.

But just a few feet away from the sparkling dance floor, the hidden, dark reality of the family's hypocrisy was on full display.

Sitting on the cold, concrete steps of the back service staircase were two small, neglected children, their simple linen dresses covered in dust and stains.

Their bare feet rested flat against the hard stone, their faces pale and weary with a hunger that no child in this multi-million-dollar house should ever have to experience.

They clutched small, broken pieces of stale bread in their tiny hands, chewing quietly as they watched the wealthy guests celebrate through the iron railings.

Standing at the top of the stairs, looking down at the children with a mask of pure, unadulterated shock, was Julian Bennett, the brilliant co-heir of the logistics empire.

He wore an immaculate emerald-green business suit with a sharp royal blue tie, his white shirt crisp, his body locking into a state of sudden, paralyzing horror.

He had just discovered the secret compartment beneath his mother’s grand ballroom—a basement sanctuary where Carol had been hiding the biological daughters of our missing cousin.

"My God," Julian whispered, his hands dropping to the brass railing as his jaw tightened into a rigid line of absolute disgust.

"She kept them hidden down here while she wore diamonds on the stage."

I stood behind him in the shadow of the corridor, my dark green silk blouse cool against my skin, my baby Lily sleeping soundly inside the carrier on my chest.

"She didn't just hide them to save money, Julian," I said softly, my voice cutting through the distant sound of the orchestra like a razor-sharp wire.

"She hid them because their personal inheritance codes are the only thing blocking her from liquidating the international shipping trust."

"Your mother has been systematically starving the real heirs of this family to cover her forty-million-dollar deficits in Panama."

Julian slowly turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of raw realization and deep, protective fury.

"The gala ends tonight, Emily," Julian whispered, his fingers clenching the brass rail so tightly his knuckles turned a bloodless white.

"We are going to open every single door in this house."
