Chapter 5 - THE GLASS CEILING SHATTERS

The grand dining hall of the Bennett Estate was a breathtaking theater of old-money arrogance, the air thick with the scent of roasted turkey and expensive champagne.
Eighty of New York's most influential investment bankers, board directors, and high-society attorneys sat at the long mahogany table under the towering crystal chandeliers.
Carol stood at the head of the table, her deep crimson sequined evening gown glittering brilliantly as she raised her crystal flute to toast her investors.
"My dear friends and corporate partners," Carol announced, her smooth, high-society voice booming through the silent room with a chilling, theatrical sweetness.
"Tonight, as we prepare to enter the New Year, we celebrate the absolute consolidation of the Bennett Logistics registry."
"Due to the ongoing, tragic instability of my daughter, Emily, the family court has officially granted our committee full guardianship over the shipping patents."
She raised a gold-plated fountain pen, preparing to slide the nib across the final signature line of the multi-million-dollar integration deeds.
"The signature on those documents constitutes federal wire fraud, Carol," a cold, clear voice cut through the ballroom like a steel blade.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the dining hall were violently thrown open, vibrating against the stone frame as eight armed marshals stepped inside.
I walked through the threshold, my head held high, my posture rigid, commanding, and completely unbreakable.
I wore a sharp, tailored white power suit, my long blonde hair flowing around my shoulders, my daughter Lily clutched securely against my hip.
Beside me walked my brother Marcus and Captain Ellison, their tactical vests displaying the gold shields of the Financial Crimes Division.
"Emily?" Carol gasped, the gold pen slipping from her shaking fingers and clattering loudly against the porcelain plates.
Her face turned an instant, pasty white under the warm light of the chandeliers, her knees buckling slightly as the reality of my return struck her mind.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Carol shrieked, her high-society composure entirely evaporating into a mask of raw, animalistic panic.
"Security! Remove this hysterical woman from my gala immediately!"
"The security guards don't work for you anymore, Carol," Marcus said, stepping forward and tossing a thick, red-stamped federal folder onto the table.
"My division has just executed a total asset seizure on the Bennett Holding registry."
"We have the toxicological reports proving you systematically poisoned your daughter's daily medication, and we have the live video feed of the neglected heirs you kept hidden beneath the stairs."
The thirty board directors watched in breathless, paralyzed horror as the massive media screens behind the table instantly illuminated, displaying the raw forensic files.

The heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Carol's wrists ended her decades of high-society terror.
The golden queen of the Bennett family was reduced to a pale, shivering felon, her family's empire of lies permanently dismantled in front of the very world she had tried to rule.
