Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT OF VENGEANCE

The transition from an isolated, dismissed wife to the sovereign voice of a federal investigation was completed before the weekend.
I sat in a secure conference room at the Federal Regulatory Commission, flanked by Mrs. Parker and a team of senior compliance attorneys.
The files spread across the glass table were a mathematical decimation of the Calloway dynasty, mapping every single forged invoice.
"They used your name as a placeholder on the secondary shell company directories, Claire," the lead investigator explained, passing me a certified document.
"Arthur Calloway wanted a convenient target to carry the blame if the offshore network was ever exposed by the board."
"They believed that because you were a mother, you would stay quiet to protect the family name," Mrs. Parker added coldly.
"They forgot that a mother's primary instinct is to protect her child from the wolves who pretend to be his protectors," I replied.
I signed the final affidavit, my pen moving with a absolute, clinical precision that felt like a judge's final sentence.
"Send the execution notices to the investment partners, gentlemen," I commanded, looking out at the city skyline.
