Chapter 2 - THE DECOY WARRANT

The cold, sterile white of the pediatric intensive care unit seemed to vibrate under the harsh fluorescent lights as the woman in the gray suit stepped forward.
Her expression was a perfectly calculated mask of institutional indifference, her fingers tapping rhythmically against the edge of the plastic clipboard.
"Ms. Rachel Bennett," she said, her voice dropping into a professional cadence that carried zero remaining traces of human warmth.
"My name is Agent Vance from the State Child Protective Services Enforcement Division."
"We have just received an emergency temporary custody warrant signed by the regional family court commissioner at seven o'clock this evening."
"Based on a certified affidavit filed by Lauren Whitmore, you are being investigated for acute maternal neglect and severe emotional instability."
"The state is taking immediate physical possession of your son, Noah, pending a formal psychiatric evaluation of your home environment."
I felt the room tilt violently beneath my feet, my damp clothes clinging to my shivering skin as I looked at the breathing tube in my five-year-old’s mouth.
"You must be out of your mind," I whispered, my voice rising from a broken rattle into a freezing, absolute focus.
"My son is lying in a medical coma because Lauren poisoned him with a restricted psychiatric tranquilizer at the country club pool."
"Detective Harris, you have the preliminary toxicology logs right there in your hands; you know she actively blocked the medical kit!"
Detective Harris stepped between us, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line as he looked at the cold-faced woman in the gray suit.
"The affidavit was filed four hours before the incident at the pool even occurred, Rachel," he said quietly, his eyes dark with a protective anger.
"Lauren didn't just give your son that gummy to quiet him down; she used the entire medical emergency as a distraction to execute a legal ambush."
May you like
"She had already paid a corrupt court commissioner to sign the custody transfer paperwork while you were running toward the ambulance."
"She wanted to ensure that by the time you realized what she had done, your legal rights would be completely erased from the state registry."
