Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF WHITMORE

The ninety-six hours following the federal grand jury presentation witnessed the total, systematic liquidation of the Whitmore family's existence.

Their personal bank accounts were permanently dissolved, and the luxury suburban mansion they had used to parade their status was foreclosed.

The limited-edition luxury bags, the custom vehicles, and every asset they had accumulated through their thefts were seized by the state treasury.

Lauren was led through the high-security prisoner corridor in a standard orange institutional jumpsuit, her dark hair falling wildly around her face.

"Rachel, please! You can't leave me in this place!" she sobbed frantically, her nails scratching against the reinforced glass partition as I walked past.

"We are family! Think of my daughter Sophie! You cannot destroy our public name over a single mistake at a swimming pool!"

"You didn't think of family when you watched my five-year-old son turn blue on the concrete and called it a nap, Lauren," I said.

"The ledger is perfectly balanced, your corporate empire is erased, and your place in my world is permanently closed."

The district attorney moved with a clinical speed that left no room for high-society political influence or corporate bribes.

The long, suffocating night of their domestic cruelty and public arrogance had finally burned away, leaving nothing but the clean space of our survival.
