Chapter 6 - THE FORENSIC EVICTION

The seventy-two hours of arrogant confidence Julian had displayed dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the federal marshals closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around his wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

"Mom, please!" Julian sobbed, his face wet with frantic, streaming tears as he was pinned against the leather boardroom chairs.

"I did it for the family! The market was crashing, and we were going to lose the investments! I didn't want us to go under!"

"You didn't do it for the family, Julian," I said, looking down at my youngest son with dead, unyielding eyes.

"You managed your greed, and when you couldn't get my signature, you tried to steal my mind."

The district attorney moved with a swift, mathematical precision that left no room for high-priced corporate defense attorneys or political connections.

By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court officially executed an emergency suspension of the development syndicate's operations.

Their personal assets were frozen, and Julian’s luxury penthouse was liquidated by court order to pay the restitution fines to the victims of their land fraud.

The family name they had worried about protecting was permanently erased from the city's commercial registries, replaced by a federal case number.

I stood in the quiet of my living room, watching the warm afternoon sun paint the hardwood floors in shades of gold and amber.

The old wooden crib and the tiny yellow socks still sat by the window, but they no longer looked like symbols of a lonely grandmother's delusion.

They were the monuments to the day the lamb had finally stopped running and decided to tear down the slaughterhouse.

The old script of our family's silence was permanently destroyed.
