Plot twist

Chapter 2 - THE EMERGENCY ADMISSION

The tires of my SUV screeched loudly against the wet asphalt as I accelerated away from the recreation center, completely ignoring the continuous, frantic vibration of my phone on the dashboard console.

Behind us, the towering glass panels of the community center faded into the heavy afternoon fog, leaving only the dark, winding road that led directly to the county children’s hospital.

In the rearview mirror, I could see Emma holding Lily's hand with a tight, protective grip, her small face filled with a quiet, childish determination to keep her cousin safe from the storm.

Lily remained perfectly still, her head resting against the cold leather seat, her eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window as if she expected her mother's luxury vehicle to emerge from the mist at any second.

My phone screen illuminated once more, displaying a second, increasingly hostile text message from Sarah that made my throat tighten with a sudden, freezing panic.

If you do not bring my daughter back to the house immediately, Claire, I will call the authorities and report you for kidnapping, the text message read.

I took a slow, deep breath to steady the trembling in my chest, my fingers clenching the steering wheel until my knuckles turned a sharp, bloodless white.

"We aren't turning around, girls," I said, my voice carrying a flat, unyielding authority that seemed to instantly calm the rising tension in the back seat.

"Nobody is going to hurt you again, Lily, and I am going to make sure we find out exactly what is beneath that medical dressing."

The entrance to the pediatric emergency wing appeared through the downpour, its massive red neon sign casting long, crimson reflections across the flooded concrete driveway.

I parked the vehicle directly in the emergency ambulance bay, throwing the gear shift into park and turning to look at the two girls with a reassuring smile.

"Emma, I need you to stay close to Lily and hold her hand while we walk through the sliding glass doors," I instructed, my hand already reaching for my clinical ID badge in my purse.

The cold, sterile air of the hospital lobby hit my face the moment we crossed the threshold, the familiar scent of antiseptic and medical-grade soap immediately locking my focus.

A young triage nurse named Marisol looked up from her computer terminal, her eyes instantly scanning the bruised skin around Lily's collarbone.

"My name is Claire Vance, and I am a licensed clinical nurse supervisor," I said, presenting my credentials with a quiet, professional urgency.

"I need an immediate, private forensic pediatric evaluation for my six-year-old niece, Lily, under suspicion of domestic abuse and non-accidental trauma."

Marisol's face went completely still, her fingers flying across her keyboard to initiate the secure, confidential registration protocol that bypassed the public waiting area.

"Take them straight to Trauma Bay 3, Claire," she whispered, her voice dropping into a low, protective register.
