Chapter 3 - THE UNRAVELING TRUTH

The clinical hum of the cardiac monitors in Trauma Bay 3 provided a steady, metallic rhythm that seemed to amplify the quiet fear in Lily's eyes.
She sat on the edge of the examination table, her small legs dangling over the white paper lining, her fingers still clutching the blue-and-white beach towel.
Dr. Adrian Shaw entered the room with a calm, deliberate step, his silver-haired head bowed over the digital chart before he looked up to offer a warm, reassuring smile.
"Hello, Lily," Adrian said softly, his voice carrying the gentle, practiced ease of a veteran pediatrician who had spent thirty years protecting the city's children.
"My name is Dr. Adrian, and I’m just going to take a very quick, very gentle look at your shoulder to make sure everything is healthy."
He looked at me, a silent, knowing gravity passing between us as I stepped forward to assist him in removing the medical dressing.
With slow, careful movements, Adrian applied a warm adhesive remover to the edges of the clean white bandage, peeling it back to reveal the skin underneath.
My breath caught in my throat, a sudden, sickening wave of anger washing over me as the true nature of my niece’s injury was finally exposed to the bright clinical lights.
Beneath the dressing lay a deep, geometric chemical burn, the skin perfectly seared in the distinct shape of a industrial heating element.
"This is a localized thermal injury, Claire," Adrian murmured, his clinical mask slipping for a fraction of a second to reveal a deep, protective fury.
"This was not caused by a kitchen accident, nor was it a playground fall."
"The margins of the burn are too precise, suggesting a heated metal object was held against her skin with continuous, deliberate pressure."
Lily looked down at the floor, her bottom lip trembling as she tried to hold back the silent tears that were beginning to pool in her eyes.
"The man with the loud voice did it," she whispered, her voice so quiet that we had to lean closer to capture the trembling words.
"He said if I screamed, he would make Mommy go away forever."
"Who is the man with the loud voice, Lily?" I asked gently, my hand stroking her hair as I tried to keep my own voice from breaking.
"Thomas," she sobbed, burying her face against my shoulder.

"Mommy's new husband."
