Chapter 4 - The Audited Generosity

The reception didn't continue according to my sister's perfect script.

Within ten minutes, the celebratory atmosphere had dissolved into a series of quiet, tense discussions among the 120 wedding guests.

Silas Montgomery didn't return to the head table; he pulled his personal personal wealth manager into the side corridor, his face a stern mask of absolute finality.

My father hurried after him, his hands gesturing frantically as he tried to salvage the financial arrangements that had been finalized weeks earlier.

"Silas, please, let's not make a hasty decision over a misunderstanding," my dad pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper.

"The corporate expansion project... the bridge loan your firm promised to clear next Monday... we need those funds to stabilize the regional offices."

"The bridge loan was predicated on the assumption that I was partnering with a family of integrity, Richard," Silas said, not pausing his stride.

"But I just discovered that the down payment for my son's new suburban estate was funded entirely by a private medical trust left to Jenna by her maternal grandmother."

"A trust that you and your current wife have been systematically borrowing against for the last forty-eight months under a falsified power of attorney."

I stood near the kitchen entrance, my simple navy dress offering a sharp contrast to the luxury surrounding me, my hands tucked into my pockets.

I had known about the missing trust funds for three months; I had discovered the discrepancies while auditing my tax filings for the hospital registry.

I had kept quiet because I didn't want to cause a scene before the wedding, choosing to endure their insults rather than fracture the family before the holiday.

But standing in that corridor, listening to the man I saved dismantle their deception, I realized that my silence hadn't been kindness.

It had been the fuel they used to keep burning my world to the ground.
