Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Family Syndicate

By midnight, the luxury hotel ballroom was completely empty, the white floral arrangements and half-eaten wedding cake left under the dim cleaning lights.

My father, stepmother, and Felicity were gathered in the private executive suite on the top floor, their voices raised in a chaotic storm of mutual recrimination.

"You ruined it!" Felicity shrieked, throwing her designer bouquet against the wall. "You told me Silas would never find out! You said the hospital records were encrypted under the municipal pool!"

"We didn't know the old man would recognize her face!" my stepmother snapped, her elegant composure completely gone as she paced the room.

"Richard, do something! Call the lawyers! If the Montgomery group pulls the corporate funding, the logistics firm goes into foreclosure by Friday!"

My dad sat on the edge of the leather sofa, his tuxedo tie undone, his head dropping into his hands as the reality of his absolute ruin settled into the quiet suite.

The double doors of the suite opened smoothly, and Silas entered, followed by two senior forensic investigators from the state district attorney's office.

"The lawyers can't save your accounts, Richard," Silas said, placing a certified asset freeze notice flat on the marble coffee table.

"The state medical fraud division has officially issued an indictment for the unauthorized exploitation of Jenna Wells's inheritance trust."

"Every asset you listed as collateral for the corporate expansion—the house, the vehicles, the country club shares—belongs to the state trust now."

Felicity turned to me, her eyes filled with a concentrated venom that made her look entirely foreign. "You think you won, Jenna? You're just a nurse who cleans up blood for a living! You'll never belong in our world!"

"I don't want to belong in your world, Felicity," I said quietly, stepping into the room. "My world has real people in it. People who breathe because I tell them to."
