Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Machine

The clock on the kitchen wall ticked past 1:30 a.m. as Hannah and Zoe finally fell into a restless sleep upstairs.

Down in my basement office, the cold glow of three monitors illuminated the dark room, casting sharp shadows against my old military awards.

I didn't open a regular browser; I tapped directly into an encrypted satellite proxy line I had maintained since my days in US Army Intelligence.

For thirty years, I had hunted ghosts, tracked high-level financial fraud, and dismantled sophisticated digital footprints across three different continents.

Gavin thought I was just a quiet, retired grandmother who spent her days sanding cedar chests and gardening in the backyard.

He had no idea that the woman he had been gaslighting for five years was a former Senior Warrant Officer with a master classification in cyber warfare.

I bypassed the firewall of his Princeton home network within four minutes, tracing the system's core data logs back to a hidden network router disguised as an automated thermostat.

Deep within the encrypted file structure, I uncovered a secure, password-protected partition labeled under a random serial number.

My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, executing a brute-force decryption protocol that utilized an old agency backdoor code.

The loading bar crawled across the screen, then flashed bright blue: ACCESS GRANTED — FULL COMPROMISE.

The first spreadsheet that populated the display made my blood pressure skyrocket, the numbers spelling out a multi-million-dollar betrayal.

Zoe’s college fund wasn't just low; it had been completely drained down to $0.00, transferred through three international shell companies in the Cayman Islands.

But Gavin hadn't spent that money on bad investments or sports cars.

He had been using his corporate position at a local pharmaceutical firm to run an offshore money laundering ring for a black-market pharmaceutical distributor.

And right at the bottom of the master folder, I found a digital scan of a power of attorney document with Hannah's forged signature, ready to transfer my own retirement estate into his name by Friday morning.
