Chapter 4 - The Paperwork She Didn't See Coming

Gordon tried to use his usual booming, authoritative voice, stepping in front of his wife. "This is our house, Elena! You live under our roof! What happens in this house is decided by us!"

I pulled a secondary folder from my bag—one I had kept locked in my office drawer for three years.

"You're right, Gordon," I said, tossing the blue ledger onto the table. "It was your house."

"Until three years ago, when you couldn't pay the back property taxes, and you begged me to quietly assume the primary mortgage."

"For thirty-six months, I have paid every single dollar on the mortgage, the property taxes, the utility bills, and the home insurance."

"You signed a secondary quitclaim agreement stating that if I maintained the primary payments for three consecutive years, seventy percent of the property equity transferred into my name."

"That three-year mark passed last Tuesday."

Brenda’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Gordon looked down at the legal quitclaim document carrying his own signature from three years ago—a document he had forgotten about because he assumed I was too quiet and submissive to ever enforce it.

"You thought I swallowed your insults because I was weak," I said, looking from Gordon to Brenda. "You thought I stayed quiet because I had nowhere else to go."

"I stayed quiet because I wanted my daughter to have a stable home near her school."

"But you chose to break her heart for twenty-five hundred dollars."

"And now, your quiet daughter-in-law is taking her house back."
