Chapter 6 - The Police Call and the Sudden Eviction

Sophie ran down the stairs, her eyes wide as she saw Sadie in my arms.

"Sadie!" Sophie cried, dropping to her knees on the kitchen floor as the little dog wiggled out of my grip to lick the tears from my daughter's face.

The two of them collapsed into a tight embrace, Sadie burying her nose into Sophie's sweater while my daughter held her as if she would never let go.

The lead police officer turned to Alicia, clicking a pair of handcuffs onto her wrists. "Alicia Vance, you are under arrest for grand theft and attempted fraud."

Brenda rushed forward, crying dramatically. "You can't arrest my daughter! This is a family dispute! Elena, tell them to stop!"

"I am not telling them anything, Brenda," I said, holding my daughter's hand as my attorney stepped through the front door carrying a certified eviction notice.

"And as seventy percent owner of this property, I am serving you and Gordon with a thirty-day notice to vacate these premises."

Gordon sank into his chair, his newspaper long forgotten, his face a hollow mask of total defeat. "Elena... please. Where are we supposed to go?"

"That's none of my business, Gordon," I replied, using his exact words from breakfast. "You can ask 'nice people from church'."
