Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE

The flickering neon sign of the roadside motel cast long, rhythmic red shadows across the standard beige walls of the cramped room.

I sat on the edge of the mattress, my Department of Defense uniform still damp from the freezing Kansas rain, the Santa-hat teddy bear resting on the pillow beside me like a silent witness to a tactical ambush.

For eleven years, I believed my marriage to Ross was a partnership built on mutual respect; I believed that my dangerous deployment schedules were an investment in our family’s security.

Instead, the cold, calculated look on my sister Gwendolyn's face and the malicious, recording glare of Ross's smartphone had transformed my return into a legal battlefield.

My fingers didn't tremble as I pulled out a secure, military-grade encrypted communication device from the hidden compartment of my tactical duffel bag.

I connected the auxiliary interface to the local network, my eyes fixing on the progress wheel as I bypassed the commercial cellular filters to establish an unhackable link to our command desk in Washington.

"General Vance, this is Captain Corinne Hardy," I said clearly into the receiver, my voice dropping into a freezing, absolute focus.

"I have a tier-one domestic security compromise involving identity fraud, child coercion, and the systematic alteration of restricted communications."

"My active-duty phone number has been cloned, and a series of deepfake threatening media blocks have been introduced into the regional law enforcement registries."

"We logged your biometric signal the second you authenticated through the Kansas hub, Corinne," the General’s deep voice boomed back.

"The forensic intelligence division has been quietly tracking your sister Gwendolyn's digital activities for the last five months."

"She didn't just move into your suburban home; she has been systematically routing corporate logistics grants from our department into an unauthorized account registered in Ross’s name."

"They believed your field isolation meant you were blind to the ledger entries, but they have no idea that the master keys belong entirely to your division."

I closed the secure connection, a cold, crystalline resolution settling deep inside my chest as the memory of my daughter Casey's bruised wrist burned away the final remnants of my grief.

"You wanted to use a police protocol to orchestrate a public custody trap, Ross," I murmured to the dark window.

"Now, the counter-intelligence begins."
