Chapter 5 - The Paper Trail of Greed

Before Patricia could launch into another theatrical insult, Eleanor set her teacup down with a quiet, deliberate tap.

"Ethan," Eleanor spoke, her voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "Did you read the complete legal appendix attached to the hotel transfer deed last night?"

Ethan swallowed hard, his eyes darting from his mother to the burgundy folder sitting on the corner of the desk. "It was just standard trust language..."

"It was a conditional asset covenant," Eleanor corrected him, pulling a thick black binder from her briefcase.

"Five years ago, your mother took out a $4.5 million high-interest loan from Apex Capital to purchase her estate in West Palm Beach," Eleanor explained, opening the binder to reveal signed bank notes.

"Three years ago, your investment firm borrowed $7.8 million from Vance Holdings to cover secondary trading losses."

Patricia’s face drained of every drop of color. She took a step back, clutching her designer handbag against her chest. "How... how do you know about Vance Holdings?"

"Because Vance Holdings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bennett Commercial Investments," Eleanor said with a gentle, terrifying smile. "I am your primary creditor, Patricia."

"I own your house, I own your firm's debt, and I own every single line of credit your family relies on to pretend you belong in Chicago high society."

Ethan stared at his mother, then back at Eleanor, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "Mom... what is she talking about?"

"Under Clause 14B of the hotel trust," I chimed in, stepping around the desk, "the moment you entered this building today attempting to force an unauthorized management takeover through marital coercion, your entire $12.3 million debt portfolio was officially triggered for immediate demand."

I looked at my husband, watching the full, horrific reality of his situation settle into his mind.

"You have twenty-four hours to pay twelve million dollars in full, Ethan," I said softly.

"Or my attorneys will initiate foreclosure on your mother's estate and seize your firm by sunset tomorrow."
