Plot twist

Chapter 12 - Adrian’s New Direction

Adrian decided to leave the corporate career.

It wasn't a snap decision.

It was a slow, deliberate realization.

He returned to architecture.

He didn't want to design monuments to ego.

He wanted to design homes that were accessible and warm.

He showed me his sketches.

They were beautiful—functional, bright, and centered on the needs of the people living in them.

"This is what I want to do," he said.

"Then do it," I encouraged.

He started a small firm.

He worked out of a garage.

He didn't have the prestige of the Whitcomb name, but he had the passion.

I supported him fully, even as we sold the excess furniture to downsize.

The lifestyle was simpler, but it felt more authentic.

I saw the pride he took in every line he drew.

It was a pride I had never seen before.

I realized that my pride in him had once been about his potential to carry the family name.

Now, my pride was about his courage to follow his own path.

It was a different kind of love.

It was a love that let go.

And it was the best kind of love there was.

He was happy.

And because he was happy, I was happy.

The legacy was shifting.

It wasn't about the name anymore.

It was about the work.

And the work was good.
