The ninety-six hours following the grand jury presentation witnessed the total, systematic destruction of the life Carol had built upon her lies.
Her personal bank accounts were permanently dissolved, and the luxury suburban estate she used to parade her false wealth was foreclosed.
The designer clothing, the expensive jewelry she had bought with my stolen college funds, and every asset she owned were seized by the treasury.
She was led through the high-security prisoner corridor in a standard orange institutional jumpsuit, her short blonde hair falling wildly around her face.
"Emily, please! You cannot leave your own mother in a place like this!" she sobbed frantically, her nails scratching against the glass partition.
"We are blood! Think of your son's reputation in this city! You cannot destroy my entire legacy over an accident at a party!"
"You didn't think of blood when you watched my baby stop moving on that floor and reached for the donation box, Carol," I said.
"The ledger is perfectly balanced, your corporate empire is erased, and your position in my world is permanently closed."
The district attorney moved with a clinical speed that left no room for high-society political influence or corporate bribes from her remaining partners.
