Chapter 2 - The Open Envelopes and the Cold Reality

The front door clicked shut with a heavy, final thud, leaving behind an eerie silence that hung in the dining room like a thick winter fog.

For nearly two minutes, nobody at the table moved, their eyes locked onto the three white envelopes resting near the cooling salmon.

Ryan was the first to reach out, his hand shaking slightly as he pulled his envelope across the table, his fingers tearing the neat paper seal.

Inside was not a sentimental note or a plea for a better dynamic; it was a comprehensive, legally certified eviction notice.

The document carried the official stamp of the county circuit court, giving Ryan and Megan exactly thirty days to vacate the premises.

Megan snatched her envelope next, her manicured nails ripping the paper as she pulled out a secondary legal document—a formal termination of the private trust agreement.

For five years, Helen had quietly subsidized their lifestyle, covering the property taxes, the insurance, and the maintenance fees through the estate Arthur had left behind.

"This is impossible," Megan whispered, her voice dropping its high-pitched confidence as she looked at her parents.

"She can't evict us. This house was supposed to belong to Ryan. It’s our family home."

"The deed has always been entirely in my mother's name, Megan," Ryan said, his face turning an ashen, deathly shade of grey as he stared at the final line of the notice.

"And she didn't just give us thirty days to leave. She officially revoked my access to the legacy investment dividends."

Megan's mother slowly lowered her wineglass, the polite smile she had worn all evening vanishing completely.

"Ryan, you told us your mother had agreed to sign the property transfer over to you for your thirtieth birthday next week."

"She was going to," Ryan muttered, his voice cracking as he looked toward the empty hallway where his mother had just walked out into the night.

"But I guess... I guess she changed her mind."
