Chapter 6 - The Audited Legacy

The next three weeks were a masterclass in high-stakes domestic drama as Ryan and Megan tried desperately to find a rental property that matched their social standing.
Without Helen's trust dividends, their credit score dropped significantly, forcing them to settle for a modest two-bedroom townhouse on the edge of the county line.
Megan’s parents, who had laughed so loudly at the birthday dinner, suddenly found themselves "too occupied" to offer financial assistance when the moving trucks arrived.
The luxury SUV that Megan drove was repossessed by the dealership after the primary lease payment was declined by Helen's estate managers.
Ryan stood in the empty living room on their final night in the colonial house, looking at the faded square on the wall where his father's portrait used to hang.
He pulled out his phone, typing a long, desperate message to his mother's old email address—the only contact line that hadn't been officially blocked.
“Mom, we’re out of the house. I'm sorry. I'm so incredibly sorry for what we did. I didn't see what was happening until it was too late.”
He didn't receive a reply that night, or the next morning, or the week after that.

But the silence wasn't malicious; it was the boundaries of a woman who had finally learned that forgiveness doesn't mean allowing people to step on you a second time.
