Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Seizure

By 8:30 the following morning, the corporate headquarters of Vance Global stood surrounded by three black municipal sedans.
I walked through the main glass doors of the executive suite, flanked by two senior forensic accountants and our family's primary estate attorney, Mr. Harrison.
The administrative staff stopped in their tracks, their faces tightening as they saw the quiet, reserved woman who usually stayed in the background walk straight toward the boardroom.
Garrett was already inside, huddled over a laptop with his legal defense team, his wrinkled suit replaced by a fresh, expensive blazer that couldn't hide the frantic sweat on his brow.
"Clara!" Garrett shouted, standing up so quickly his leather chair slammed into the walnut wall. "What is the meaning of this? We are in the middle of a pre-market trading session! Get these people out of my boardroom!"
"It isn't your boardroom anymore, Garrett," Mr. Harrison said, placing a certified court injunction directly on top of his financial spreadsheets.
"As of 12:01 a.m., Mrs. Clara Vance has executed the primary emergency clause of the Preston family trust."
"Your operational clearance as Chief Executive Officer has been legally revoked due to suspected corporate malfeasance and estate fraud."
Vanessa walked in from the side executive office, her perfect salon hair and designer dress looking entirely out of place next to the federal audit boxes.
"Clara, stop this ridiculous display!" Vanessa yelled, her face flushing a dangerous shade of crimson. "You're grieving, you're not in your right mind! You can't ruin this company over a personal dispute!"
"Our son died at 11:47 last night, Vanessa," I said, looking her directly in the eyes until her arrogant expression began to falter.
"While he was asking if his father was coming, you were helping his father sign the clearance forms to drain his medical trust."

"This isn't a personal dispute. This is a criminal asset seizure."
