Chapter 2 - The Secrets Inside the Kate Spade

The officer’s warning was clear, but my curiosity was an untamed fire.
I stared at the black leather bag resting under the soft kitchen light.
My fingers didn't just tremble; they practically flew toward the zipper.
I pulled it back, the smooth metal track giving way to reveal the dark lining inside.
The first thing I pulled out was a thick manila folder wrapped in heavy rubber bands.
I snapped the bands off, unfolding a stack of legal documents that carried the official emblem of the State Fraud Department.
My eyes scanned the lines, the text swimming before me as the true horror of the situation settled into the room.
These weren't simple investment portfolios.
They were power of attorney forms, asset transfer deeds, and pre-written medical incompetence certificates.
Every single page carried my name at the top.
And at the bottom, waiting for a signature, was a blank space next to a red notary stamp.
Linda hadn't just been asking sweet little questions about my savings and my late husband's pension.
She had been systematically tracking every single asset I owned.
The house, the retirement fund, the stocks my husband had left behind—everything was cataloged down to the very last penny.
But that wasn't the most shocking discovery.
Tucked behind the primary folder was a secondary ledger filled with names of other elderly women in our county.
Next to three of those names, the word “Settled” was written in sharp, aggressive red ink.
Those three women had lost their homes to foreclosure within the last two years.
I checked the dates, my breath catching as I realized the pattern.
Linda Chen wasn't a lonely mother-in-law looking for a new family connection.
She was a professional predator, a financial vulture who targeted vulnerable widows and used her daughter to seal the deal.
And my son Marcus was the useful idiot who had opened the front door for her.
I slowly slid the documents back into the bag, my mind working at a speed it hadn't reached in decades.
The three dollars inside the pink plastic piggy bank wasn't a silly symbolic gift from Ashley.
It was an inside joke between the two of them.
A cruel, mocking reminder of what they intended to leave me with when the winter was over.
I stood by the kitchen sink, looking down at the pink plastic bank, a cold, unyielding calm settling over my chest.
Sometimes the biggest trap is the one you walk into willingly.
And sometimes the mouse knows exactly how to spring the metal bar without getting caught.

I picked up the purse, carried it to the basement stairs, and hidden it deep inside the old laundry chute.
Then I sat at the table and began writing a series of new instructions on the back of my Christmas cards.
