Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Chen Dynasty
Linda Chen didn't move a muscle, but the practiced, aristocratic elegance on her face began to shatter into a jagged mask of pure panic.
"Mrs. Williams, this is an outrageous misunderstanding," she said, her voice dropping its sweet tone entirely, becoming sharp and defensive.
"Ashley, tell your mother-in-law to stop this embarrassing display immediately."
"Ashley can't save your accounts, Linda," I said, stepping closer to the counter and pulling the secondary ledger from my pocket.
"The state police called this house last night at 11:47 p.m. They were looking for a woman who target older homeowners for asset manipulation."
"They were very interested to know if you had left your Kate Spade purse on my counter."
Ashley’s eyes went wide, her arms dropping to her sides as she turned to look at her mother. "Mom? What is she talking about? What purse?"
"She opened it!" Linda shrieked, her control vanishing completely as she lunged toward the table. "You had no right to look through my private property, you old hag!"
Marcus stepped between his mother-in-law and me, his face a picture of absolute horror as the reality of the situation finally broke through his confusion.
"Mom Linda... is this true?" he whispered, his voice shaking. "The money for the investment fund... the shares you told me to buy in your company... where did that capital actually go?"
"It went into the lease for the BMW, Marcus," I said smoothly, leaning against the counter. "The car you bought her wasn't funded by your bonus. It was funded by the equity line she convinced you to open against your own condo last month."
"She used your signature to clear her own debts, and your wife helped her do it."

Ashley burst into dramatic, hysterical tears, dropping to her knees on the kitchen floor. "Marcus, I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! She told me it was just a legal tax loop! She said it would protect your future!"
"Your future is currently sitting in the back of a police cruiser, Ashley," I said as the distant sound of sirens began to echo down the suburban street.
