Chapter 2 - THE SEVERED LINE

The cold marble of the Grand Imperial Ballroom felt completely solid beneath my knees as I held my weeping son, the brilliant glow of the crystal chandeliers illuminating the pink-and-white frosting smudging his small face.

Richard’s warning gesture remained frozen in the air, his lips pressed together in a tight line of complete, entitled authority as he waited for me to apologize and crawl away.

"You think this empire is yours to rule, Richard?" I whispered, my voice carrying a freezing, absolute calm that cut straight through the soft string quartet's melody.

"You're nothing but a guest in my world, and your invitation was just officially cancelled."

I didn't wait for his dramatic response, nor did I look back at Victoria, whose gold-beaded gown was glittering under the lights as she smirked at the primary defense contractors.

Instead, I scooped Leo into my arms, my fingers tightly clenching the silver evening clutch where the secure digital-key device was already pulsing with an active, encrypted connection.

We walked through the towering glass double doors of the cathedral hall, the heavy silence of the two hundred high-society guests snapping shut behind us like a vault door.

Outside, the autumn wind was cold, carrying the sharp scent of rain-slicked asphalt as my private driver, Arthur, immediately opened the door of the black armored transport.

"Take us to the secure command suite at Vanguard Strategic, Arthur," I commanded, my hand gently wiping the pink vanilla frosting from my son's dark navy tuxedo.

"And initiate an emergency compliance audit on the Mercer family's third-quarter procurement contracts before the market opens tomorrow morning."

"The execution files have been ready for months, Ms. Olivia," Arthur replied, his face an unyielding mask of professional discipline as he threw the car into drive.

In the back seat, Leo’s crying slowly quieted into a shallow, brave rhythm, his small hand holding onto my sleeve as the neon signs of the financial district blurred past.

My phone buzzed against the leather seat, displaying a text message from Richard that carried the familiar, arrogant tone of a husband who believed he owned the room.

If you do not return to the ballroom and apologize to Victoria for this public embarrassment, Olivia, I will instruct the board to revoke your private administrative access.

I stared at the words until they became nothing but a comical footnote in the destruction of his family name, my thumb swiping to activate the master override code.

"You wanted a silent wife, Richard," I murmured, my eyes fixed on the towering glass panels of the Vanguard headquarters approaching through the mist.

"Now, you are going to get an absolute foreclosure."
