Chapter 6 - THE FORECLOSURE OF PRIDE

The seventy-two hours following the federal grand jury presentation witnessed the total, systematic liquidation of the Mercer family’s public existence.

Their personal bank accounts were permanently frozen, and the luxury suburban estate they had used to parade their false status was sealed with foreclosure tags.

Julianne’s lavish wedding gifts, the expensive branded vehicles, and the pristine assets they had accumulated through their thefts were seized by the treasury.

Richard was led through the high-security prisoner corridor in a standard institutional jumpsuit, his handsome face looking pale and entirely empty of pride.

"Olivia, please! You can't let them take everything!" he screamed, his hands slamming against the reinforced glass partition as I walked past.

"We are family! Think of our son's reputation in this city! You cannot leave my mother without a place to live!"

"You didn't think of our son when you stood silent while your sister struck him down onto a marble floor to protect your vanity, Richard," I said.

"The ledger is perfectly balanced, your family name is erased, and your position in my world is permanently foreclosed."

The district attorney moved with a clinical, mathematical speed that left no room for high-society influence or political corporate interventions.

By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court officially executed the permanent transfer of all remaining Mercer holdings to the Vanguard child advocacy trust.

The long, suffocating night of their domestic cruelty and public arrogance had finally burned away, leaving nothing but the quiet, clean space of our survival.
