Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW BEHIND THE SHELF

The harsh, fluorescent light of the grocery store aisle caught the polished leather shoes of the man who had quietly stepped out from the shadows near the bakery station.
My boyfriend, Tyler, choked on his own laughter, his face shifting from a cruel, mocking smirk to a pasty, pale mask of absolute panic as the shadow loomed behind me.
I slowly turned around, my hands still protectively cradling my pregnant belly, my knees trembling near the whole-grain buns that lay scattered across the white linoleum floor.
Standing there, flanked by two men in dark, customized security uniforms, was Arthur Sterling—the chief executive of Sterling Global Industries and the primary trustee of my late father’s estate.
"I believe the young man was asking how she is supposed to raise a child, Arthur," the senior attorney beside him said, his voice dropping into a freezing, calculated frequency.
"Perhaps we should notify the regional credit division that his consulting firm no longer possesses the corporate liquidity to answer that question."
Tyler took a frantic step backward, nearly tripping over the handle of his own shopping cart as his eyes locked onto the platinum emblem on Arthur’s lapel.
"Mr. Sterling... I... I didn't realize you were in the city," Tyler stammered, his arrogant, level tone completely evaporating into a dry, desperate rattle.
"We were just having a private domestic disagreement about our grocery budget; it's nothing that concerns the development board."
"Everything concerning the welfare of my late partner’s daughter concerns the development board, Tyler," Arthur said, his posture rigid and commanding.
"The three-dollar buns you just humiliated her over were produced by a bakery infrastructure company that she legally owns."
"And the wallet you boasted about was funded entirely by a commercial lease guarantee that my office signed three months ago."

"The lease is closed, Tyler."
"And your execution period begins right now."
