Chapter 3 - The Vault of Broken Promises

By midnight, the townhouse was completely silent, but the air still held the suffocating weight of the truth.

I sat on the living room floor with Chloe, a heavy black iron key resting on the coffee table between us.

“Melissa didn't die in an accident, Emma,” Chloe said, her eyes filling with tears she had held back for six years.

“She was trying to leave him, and she hid her corporate banking files inside a private locker before she disappeared.”

Ryan had told me he inherited his logistics business from a wealthy uncle who passed away in Europe.

He had forgotten that before I became his wife, I spent three years working as a digital archivist for the state database.

We drove to the storage facility under the cover of a heavy Ohio rainstorm, the black key fitting perfectly into the rusted padlock of Locker 114.

Inside, beneath a stack of old winter coats, sat a small metal lockbox wrapped in a blue plastic tarp.

I pried the box open with a small crowbar, my breath catching as I found a collection of old diaries, bank receipts, and a forged life insurance policy.

The policy was registered under Melissa’s name.

The primary beneficiary was Ryan Cole.

The payout date was exactly forty-eight hours after her reported vehicle disappearance six years ago.
