Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE LEDGER

The transition from a newlywed bride to a ruthless, calculating corporate adversary was completed before the hotel security team even finished escorting my mother-in-law out of the ballroom.

I did not return to the honeymoon suite at the resort, nor did I shed a single tear over the ruined silk veil sitting in the back of my father's sedan.

Instead, I sat in the quiet, high-security offices of Pierce & Associates, the early morning light of the city painting the tall glass windows in cold, clinical shades of gray.

"The forensic accounting team spent the last twenty-four hours mapping the cash reserves of Hale Development, Claire," Naomi said, placing a thick, certified bank ledger on the metal table between us.

"They didn't just use your marriage as a public relations stunt; they had already prepared three separate shell company transfers to siphon your liquidated cash to cover Evan’s gambling debts in Macau."

"They forged your electronic signature on a joint corporate authorization form, scheduling the transfer for precisely eight o'clock this morning," she added, her eyes flashing with a sharp, protective anger.

"They believed that because you were distracted by the wedding, because you were supposed to be on a flight to Cabo, you wouldn't check the transaction logs," I stated, a dangerous, crystalline focus settling behind my eyes.

"They forgot that I built my entire career finding the exact places where corrupt men bury their panic inside paperwork."

"The federal marshals have already been notified of the digital forgery," Naomi confirmed, a cold, satisfied smile touching her mouth.

"The execution order has been signed, and by noon today, Daniel will discover that the keys to the kingdom have been completely changed."
