Chapter 4 - THE CORPORATE EXTRACTION
The early morning sun of Monday did nothing to warm the frosted glass windows of Hale Development’s headquarters in the financial district.
Daniel sat in the executive suite, his custom-tailored tuxedo replaced by a wrinkled grey business suit, his hand clenching a glass of cold water as his phone buzzed relentlessly.
His brother, Evan, burst through the double doors, his face pale and sweating, his hands shaking as he threw a stack of treasury notifications onto the mahogany desk.
"Daniel! The bank just issued an emergency suspension on our primary operating line of credit!" Evan screamed, his voice rising in a sharp, frantic register of panic.
"They are claiming there is an administrative review underway regarding our recent luxury real estate acquisitions in Malibu!"
Daniel frowned, his thumb swiping across his screen as a cold, sudden wire of panic began to tighten around his throat.
"That's impossible," he muttered, his voice dropping out of its usual arrogant, entitled register.
"Claire is just an emotional girl; she’s probably crying at her father’s cabin right now, she doesn't have the leverage to block our corporate assets."

"She didn't block the assets, Daniel," I said, stepping through the doorway of his office, my sharp black tailored power suit replacing the white lace wedding dress.
"I simply allowed the federal inspectors to review the unedited transaction logs that you tried to forge behind my back."
