Chapter 3 - The Black Card Deactivation and the Midnight Alert

By 2:15 a.m., the storm outside the Marriott had intensified into a blinding whiteout.

Inside my room, the night was completely quiet until my phone began to buzz aggressively against the wooden nightstand.

Patricia.

I didn't answer; I simply turned the screen face down, letting the vibration die out into the silence.

A second later, a series of frantic text messages from my sister Brittany began to light up the display.

“Alyssa, pick up! What did you do to Jamal’s card? We’re at an all-night diner near the highway and the payment just got declined for our coffee!”

“The manager is threatening to call the local police because Jamal told him the card was an unrestricted corporate line!”

I let out a slow, quiet laugh, the bitter taste of their decades-long selfishness finally dissolving entirely.

Jamal had sat on my mother’s leather sofa just hours earlier, swirling expensive wine and telling me to book a hotel if I wanted luxury.

Now he was stuck at a highway diner, unable to pay for a twenty-dollar breakfast because the woman he mocked had finally pulled the plug.

I didn't type a reply; I blocked both of their numbers, ensuring my daughter's sleep would not be interrupted by their manufactured chaos.

The next notification on my screen was an automated alert from the regional bank consortium.

“Notice: The primary automated mortgage payment for the property on Elm Street has been successfully discontinued at the user's request.”

The bank’s automated system would send a physical foreclosure warning to Patricia's front door by Monday morning.

She would finally discover that the cryptocurrency profits Jamal boasted about at the country club had never existed.

The house she lived in wasn't a monument to her younger daughter's successful marriage; it was a beautiful cage I had been paying for while sleeping on their hypothetical concrete floors.
