Chapter 2 - THE SILENT NURSERY

Preston’s boots froze against the polished hardwood floor of the master bedroom as the door swung open, his breath hitching in his throat.
The sight that met his eyes was so grotesque, so utterly unnatural, that his mind struggled to process it for one long, agonizing second.
There, stretched out on the massive white bed, was Sarah, the twins' primary nanny, dressed in her olive-green uniform and cream-colored apron.
Her arms were pulled high above her head, her wrists bound tightly to the dark wooden posts of the headboard with thick, abrasive hemp ropes.
Her ankles were secured in the same brutal manner, pinned to the footboard of the bed so she could not move a single inch to defend herself.
But it was not just the nanny who was bound to the mattress.
Lying directly on top of Sarah's chest and stomach were Preston's eight-month-old twin babies, Mikaelyn and Masonel.
The twins were dressed in their matching, innocent white knitted sweaters, their tiny eyes closed in a deep, medically induced sleep.
A thick, rough rope was wrapped repeatedly around the babies' small bodies, binding them tightly to the nanny’s torso like packages ready for shipment.
Sarah’s face was bruised, a thin trail of dried blood near her temple, her eyes closed as she breathed in shallow, terrified gasps.
"What is this?" Preston finally choked out, his voice a raw, desperate gasp of pure, unadulterated horror as he rushed toward the bed.
His hands, usually so steady during multi-million-dollar real estate negotiations, trembled violently as his fingers touched the rough fibers of the rope.
"Sarah! Wake up!" Preston pleaded, his chest heaving as he desperately pulled at the tight knots binding his daughter’s tiny knitted sweater.
The nanny’s eyelids fluttered open, her eyes wide with a sudden, overwhelming panic as she recognized the face of her employer.
"Mr. Aldridge..." Sarah whispered, her voice a dry, rattling thread that barely carried across the quiet bedroom.
"They... they took them."
"They forced me to let them in."
"Who did this to you, Sarah?" Preston demanded, his voice dropping into an ice-cold, lethal frequency as he pulled a silver pocket knife from his jacket.
He quickly sliced through the thick ropes holding Sarah's wrists, the rough fibers snapping apart under the sharp steel blade.
He gently lifted the twins from her chest, holding both Mikaelyn and Masonel against his broad shoulders, his heart hammering against his ribs as he checked their steady, slow breathing.
"It was your stepmother, Victoria," Sarah sobbed, her hands shaking as she rubbed her bruised wrists.
"She came with her brother, Richard, and three private security guards from the holding firm."
"They had a medical syringe, Mr. Aldridge."
"They forced me to watch them administer a mild sedative to the babies to keep them quiet while they staged this room."
"Victoria said that if you didn't sign the voluntary transfer deeds in the study tonight, they would make sure the twins never woke up."

Preston stood in the center of the silent bedroom, his children clutched tightly in his arms, his face a mask of bitter, unyielding stone.
The golden prince of the Aldridge real estate empire was gone, replaced by a dangerous, silent father who was ready to tear the world apart to protect his family.
