Chapter 5 - THE GALA OF RETRIBUTION

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a breathtaking, suffocating monument to old-money power, the air smelling of expensive perfume and corporate greed.

Under the towering, brilliant crystal chandeliers, three hundred of Chicago's most prominent billionaires and media heirs raised their glasses to celebrate a lie.

A massive, glittering banner reading "ALDRIDGE & WINCHESTER: THE NEW ERA" hung across the grand stage, framed by cascading white orchids.

Victoria Vance stood at the center of the stage, her deep crimson sequined evening gown glittering brilliantly as she raised her crystal flute to toast her investors.

Beside her stood her brother, Richard, his dark navy blue suit immaculate, his face relaxed into a smug, victorious grin.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished colleagues," Victoria announced, her smooth, high-society voice booming through the silent, vaulted room.

"Tonight, as we prepare to finalize our maritime merger, we celebrate the absolute consolidation of the Aldridge estate."

"Due to the ongoing, tragic physical and mental decline of my stepson, Preston, our committee has assumed full management of the shipping patents."

She raised a gold-plated fountain pen, preparing to slide the nib across the final signature line of the multi-million-dollar integration deeds.

"The signature on those documents constitutes federal wire fraud, Victoria," a cold, clear voice cut through the grand ballroom like a steel blade.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom were violently thrown open, the wood panels vibrating against the stone frame.

Preston walked through the threshold, his head held high, his posture rigid, commanding, and completely unbreakable.

He wore an immaculate, sharp beige suit, his dark hair swept back, his eyes carrying a lethal, crystalline focus that made Victoria’s breath halt in her throat.

Beside him walked Captain Marcus Bennett, flanked by six armed federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their gold shields gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

"Preston?" Victoria gasped, the gold pen slipping from her shaking fingers and clattering loudly against the polished stage floor.

Her face turned an instant, pasty white under the warm light of the chandeliers, her knees buckling slightly as the reality of his return struck her mind.

"What is the meaning of this?" Victoria shrieked, her high-society composure entirely evaporating into a mask of raw, animalistic panic.

"Security! Remove this trespassing, mentally unstable man from my gala immediately!"

"The security team doesn't work for you anymore, Victoria," Preston said, taking a slow, powerful step toward the stage, his voice silencing the entire room.

"And your private empire of lies is officially over."
