Chapter 2 - The Silent Severance and the Hidden Ledger

The kitchen was still thick with the suffocating smell of scorched tile when the two police officers crossed the threshold, their boots clicking heavily against the white stone floor.

Doña Victoria was practically collapsing into the arms of the first officer, her loud, theatrical wails echoing through the high ceilings of the house.

"Thank God you're here!" she sobbed, her manicured hands gripping his uniform. "My daughter-in-law has completely lost her mind. She tried to attack me, she's unstable! Look at my kitchen! Look at what she did to my son's homecoming!"

The officer, a seasoned veteran named Deputy Miller, didn't move.

His eyes didn't look at Victoria's streaming tears; instead, they locked onto the heavy iron still sitting on the counter, a thin trail of smoke drifting toward the cabinets.

Then he looked at me.

I was still pinned against the dining chair, my hands wrapped protectively around my eight-month-pregnant belly, my entire body shaking so hard my teeth clicked together.

Alejandro stood beside me like a shadow cast in solid iron.

"Officer," Alejandro’s voice was completely flat, devoid of any warmth, yet vibrating with an authority that stopped the room's chaotic energy instantly. "My name is Captain Alejandro Preston. I just returned from an active deployment. I walked through that back door less than ten minutes ago to find my mother holding a hot iron inches from my wife's stomach."

The secondary officer immediately moved toward the table, his eyes taking in the neatly stacked psychiatric evaluations, the forged medical forms, and the crumpled, fake military casualty notification.

"Victoria," Deputy Miller said, his tone shifting from sympathetic to chillingly neutral. "Step back from the Captain's wife."

Victoria's dramatic sobs caught in her throat, her eyes widening as she realized her performance wasn't anchoring the room the way it usually did. "Miller, you've known our family for years! You know Elena hasn't been right in the head! She's making up stories!"

"The iron is currently sitting at over four hundred degrees, ma'am," the secondary officer noted, using a gloved hand to unplug the cord from the wall. "And your daughter-in-law has visible defensive marks on her wrists."

Alejandro didn't wait for his mother to spin another narrative. He stepped toward the kitchen island where Victoria's designer leather purse sat open.

"What are you doing?" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking as her polished facade began to unravel completely. "That is private property! Alejandro, stop!"

Without a single word of hesitation, Alejandro inverted the heavy bag, dumping its contents across the marble counter.

Among the gold compacts, designer lipsticks, and expensive vials of perfume, a thick, bound leather ledger slid onto the stone, accompanied by a small, encrypted thumb drive carrying the stamp of a private Swiss offshore bank.

Alejandro picked up the ledger, flipped open the first page, and read the handwritten names inscribed inside—names of local real estate property owners, followed by cash amounts that matched my missing inheritance funds to the exact dollar.

"It wasn't just about custody, was it, Mother?" Alejandro said, his amber eyes locking onto hers with a precision that cut through the remaining silence. "You needed her declared mentally incompetent before the probate court cleared my father's offshore trust next week."
