Chapter 3 - Into the Viper's Nest

The foyer of the Caldwell mansion was breathtakingly lavish—soaring ceilings, a crystal chandelier, and a sweeping double staircase made of imported marble.

It was also completely eerily silent.

Richard closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, relying on his training to filter out the environment. He listened intently. No sounds of footsteps on the main floor. No voices in the kitchen.

Then, from upstairs, came a faint, muffled thud followed by a soft, agonizing whimpering.

Emily.

Richard drew his Sig Sauer P226, holding it low at the ready position, and moved up the grand staircase. He kept his back to the wall, checking every corner with practiced, lethal efficiency.

As he reached the landing on the second floor, he saw a trail of destruction leading down the long carpeted hallway. A shattered porcelain vase lay scattered across the floor. Pictures of Emily and Ethan had been ripped from the walls and smashed to pieces. Blood droplets stained the white plush runner rug.

His heart squeezed in his chest, a surge of raw, primal fury threatening to overcome his military discipline. He forced it down, burying it beneath a mountain of ice. Anger made a soldier sloppy. Cold, precise focus kept a soldier alive.

He followed the trail toward the master suite at the end of the hall. The heavy mahogany door was cracked open an inch.

Richard approached quietly, pressing his back against the wall beside the door frame. He peered through the gap.

The master bedroom was massive, but it looked like a bomb had gone off inside it. Mirrors were shattered, nightstands overturned, and clothes torn apart.

Standing in the center of the room was Ethan Caldwell.

He didn't look like the polished, charismatic CEO from the news broadcasts. His expensive designer shirt was unbuttoned and stained with sweat. His hair was disheveled, his eyes wild, bloodshot, and frantic. In his right hand, he held a glass of whiskey. In his left hand, he held Emily’s phone.

And sitting on the floor in the far corner, trapped between the wall and a fallen bookcase, was Emily.

Richard’s stomach dropped.

Her hair was matted with sweat and blood. Her left eye was swollen completely shut, deep dark bruising already purple on her cheekbone. She was clutching her arm to her ribs, trembling violently, her clothes torn at the collar. Fresh blood dripped slowly from her split lip onto her white dress.

"You think you can just run away from me?!" Ethan screamed, hurling his whiskey glass against the wall right above her head. The glass shattered, spraying shards over her shivering body. "You think your washed-up, pathetic excuse for a father can save you?! I own this city, Emily! I own the police, I own the judges, and I own YOU!"

Emily pulled her knees to her chest, sobbing silently, too terrified to speak.

Ethan stepped closer, raising his foot to kick her. "Answer me, you worthless—"

He never finished the sentence.

Richard kicked the mahogany door completely off its hinges. The heavy door smashed into Ethan with the force of a battering ram, launching the tech CEO across the room. Ethan slammed hard into the foot of the king-sized bed, rolling onto the floor with a painful gasp as the air was knocked clean out of his lungs.

"Dad...?" Emily choked out through her bloody lips, her good eye widening in utter disbelief.

Richard didn't look at Ethan. He rushed to his daughter's side, dropping his gun into its holster and dropping to his knees. He gently cupped her bruised face with his calloused hands, his voice dropping into the softest, most tender whisper imaginable.

"I'm here, baby," Richard whispered, his eyes tearing up as he saw the full extent of her injuries. "I'm right here. You're safe now."

"Dad... he's crazy..." she sobbed, burying her face into her father's chest, her frail body shaking uncontrollably. "He took my keys... he locked the gates... I couldn't get out..."

"Shh. It's over, Emily. I've got you," Richard said softly, carefully lifting her in his arms to avoid putting pressure on her fractured ribs.

Behind them, a ragged, coughing laugh sounded from the floor.

Ethan scrambled to his feet, using the bedpost for support. He wiped blood from his nose, a sick, twisted smile creeping across his face as he looked at Richard.

"Colonel Hayes," Ethan sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "Breaking and entering. Assaulting my private security. You just ruined your life, old man."

Richard slowly stood up, placing Emily safely behind him near the corner wall. He turned around to face Ethan.

The warmth in Richard's eyes vanished instantly. What remained was a terrifying, hollow stare that had made hardened enemy combatants break under interrogation.

"You laid hands on my daughter," Richard said. The words were quiet, but they carried the weight of an oncoming train.

Ethan rolled his shoulders, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, sleek black remote control. "You think you can just walk out of here with her? You have no idea what you've walked into. My company controls the entire surveillance and security grid for this county. By the time the police arrive, the footage will show that you broke in, attacked me, and kidnapped your daughter in an episode of military PTSD."

Ethan pressed a button on the remote.

Heavy, motorized steel security shutters instantly slammed down over every window in the master bedroom with a deafening metallic screech. The heavy door frame sealed itself shut with electromagnetic locks.

The bedroom was suddenly transformed into an impenetrable, soundproof steel vault.

"Welcome to my panic room, Colonel," Ethan laughed maniacally, sliding a hand behind his back toward a hidden drawer in the nightstand. "Nobody hears anything in here. Nobody gets out unless I say so. And right now... I think I'm going to put you down like the dog you are."

Ethan pulled a nickel-plated Beretta 9mm from the nightstand drawer and aimed it straight at Richard's chest.
