Chapter 4 - The War Room

Ethan’s finger tightened on the trigger of the Beretta. "Any last words, Colonel?"

Richard didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He didn't even raise his weapon.

"Just three," Richard said calmly. "Check your phone."

Ethan frowned, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What?"

"Check your phone, Ethan," Richard repeated smoothly. "Because six seconds ago, my intelligence operative breached your home's central server mainframe. Your panic room’s local network isn't encrypted against military-grade malware."

As if on cue, Ethan’s smartphone—resting on the overturned nightstand—began chiming frantically with a barrage of high-priority security alerts.

Ethan’s eyes flickered down to the screen for a fraction of a second. The display was flashing crimson red: WARNING: ALL SECURITY OVERRIDES DECRYPTED. EXTERNAL DATA TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.

"What did you do?!" Ethan shrieked, his composure cracking.

While Ethan’s attention split, Richard struck with terrifying speed.

He closed the ten-foot gap between them in the blink of an eye. Before Ethan could realign his sightlines, Richard’s left hand struck the barrel of the Beretta, forcing it upward just as Ethan pulled the trigger. A loud BANG echoed through the sealed room as the bullet discharged harmlessly into the reinforced ceiling.

Richard slammed a brutal knee strike directly into Ethan's solar plexus, folding the younger man in half. As Ethan groaned, Richard grabbed the gun from his hand, stripped the magazine, cleared the live round from the chamber, and tossed the disassembled firearm across the room.

He grabbed Ethan by the collar of his designer shirt, lifting the six-foot-two CEO off the floor with one arm, and slammed him face-first against the heavy steel shutter covering the window.

"You thought you were a predator because you could hurt a woman who trusted you," Richard growled into Ethan’s ear, his hand tightening around Ethan’s throat just enough to restrict his air. "You're not a predator, Ethan. You're a coward with money."

"Dad! Stop!" Emily’s terrified voice rang out from the corner.

Richard froze. He looked back at his daughter. Emily was watching him, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks, shaking her head.

"Don't kill him, Dad," she pleaded, her voice trembling. "Don't ruin your life for him. He's not worth it."

Richard stared at his daughter, the red haze of fury slowly clearing from his vision. He looked down at Ethan, who was gasping for air, his eyes wide with genuine, pathetic terror.

Richard took a deep, steadying breath. He released his grip, letting Ethan slide down the steel door to the floor, coughing violently.

"You're right, sweetheart," Richard said, turning back to Emily. "He's not worth my life. But he is going to pay for every single mark he put on you."

Richard pulled his phone from his pocket and tapped the speaker button. "Marcus. Status."

"Override complete, Colonel," Marcus’s voice boomed through the phone’s speakers. "The moment Ethan locked those panic shutters, his local server attempted a secure backup to his private Cloud account. My software intercepted the feed. We didn't just breach his security system—we unlocked his hidden vault."

Ethan stopped coughing, his face turning ghostly pale. "What... what vault?"

"The one hidden behind your company's firewall, Ethan," Marcus replied with a dark laugh. "The one containing high-definition video files from every hidden camera you installed in your house over the last three years. We have hundreds of hours of footage documenting your physical abuse, your illegal financial wire transfers, and your communications with state officials you've been bribing to keep your domestic violence calls buried."

Ethan began to shake violently. "No... no, that's impossible! That server is air-gapped!"

"It was air-gapped," Marcus corrected. "Until you pressed that security remote, linking your master bedroom suite to the main network. You walked right into the Colonel’s trap."

Richard walked over to Ethan, stepping heavily on the man’s hand as he tried to reach for his dropped phone. Ethan whimpered, pulling his fingers back.

"Marcus," Richard said into the phone. "Where is the evidence now?"

"It’s already been transmitted directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee State Police, the Department of Defense Inspector General, and every major news network in the state of Tennessee," Marcus confirmed. "Furthermore, the federal judge in Nashville just signed an emergency warrant for Ethan Caldwell’s arrest based on live-streamed domestic terrorism and assault charges."

Outside the mansion, the distant sound of blaring sirens began to echo through the hills of Belle Meade. Dozens of police cruisers, federal vehicles, and ambulances were approaching the estate.

Richard leaned down, placing his face inches from Ethan’s terrified expression.

"Your company is gone," Richard whispered softly. "Your reputation is gone. Your money is gone. And when the federal court gets done with you, you will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison where men like you are treated very, very poorly."

Ethan slumped against the wall, weeping openly, his entire empire collapsing around him in a matter of minutes.
