Chapter 3 - THE SECRET DIAGNOSIS

The transition from a quiet observer back into the clinical focus of an enforcement official was seamless.
By sunrise, Dr. Nora Lee, a trusted independent medical examiner who had served with me during the state compliance overhauls, arrived at the secure clinic where I had transported my mother.
Under the bright fluorescent examination lights, we moved with absolute, silent discipline, ensuring every bruise was meticulously recorded for the impending trial.
The digital imaging terminal flickered to life, displaying the deep tissue damage along my mother's left shoulder, a severe hairline fracture across her wrist, and the clear impact trauma on her ribs.
My mother let out a fragile, trembling sob, her fingers locking together with mine as the clicking of the camera documented the physical reality of the assault.
"The integrity of the skeletal structure is heavily compromised at the joint, Evelyn," Nora whispered, her medical gaze scanning the structural parameters of the scan.
"The trauma was severe, and the soft tissue damage to her abdomen will require weeks of complete immobility, but we caught the internal bleeding early."
"However, the toxicology screening just flashed a secondary compliance warning."
My jaw clenched instantly, the coldness in my veins sharpening as I looked at the chemical breakdown sheets printout.
"Sedatives," I stated, my voice devoid of any remaining human mercy.
"Yes," Nora confirmed, pointing to a highlighted row of clinical markers.

"They were preparing to declare her mentally unstable long before she ever sat on that metal precinct bench."
