Chapter 3 - The Chained Gates of Aldercrest

The sun broke over the rolling hills of Charlottesville at 8:00 AM, painting the grand white columns of Aldercrest Estate in brilliant morning light.
A fleet of black luxury sedans, flower delivery trucks, and catering vans sat idling in a massive, stalled line along the winding country road leading up to the estate.
At the front of the line stood the grand iron gates of Aldercrest.
They were wrapped in heavy steel chains, locked tight with a massive industrial padlock that gleamed dull grey under the morning sun.
Mounted directly on the center of the wrought-iron bars was a crisp, laminated white notice bearing the official corporate seal of Northbridge Commercial Holdings:
PROPERTY CLOSED / EVENT CANCELED
By order of executive management, the promotional event agreement for the Marlowe-Thorne wedding has been permanently revoked due to contract default and unauthorized usage. Trespassers will be prosecuted.
Inside the lead limousine, Kendra was sitting in her white lace bridal gown, her veil pristine, her makeup flawless.
Beside her, my mother was applying a final layer of lipstick, chatting excitedly about the Senator’s arrival.
Then the limousine driver shifted into park and turned around. "Mrs. Marlowe... we have a problem. The entrance is completely blocked."
Denise frowned, rolling down her window to look out at the idling line of luxury cars. "What do you mean blocked? Call the venue director immediately! We paid for the grand entrance!"
Kendra threw open her door, stepping out onto the gravel driveway in her heels, holding her silk train off the ground. "This is ridiculous! Spencer’s parents are right behind us!"
Spencer Thorne stepped out of his sports car, his navy suit sharp, his face flush with confusion as he walked up to the chained gates.
"What is this?" Spencer demanded, pointing at the heavy padlock. "We confirmed the booking three days ago! Where is the staff?"
At that exact moment, a sleek, deep-red luxury sedan pulled up smoothly along the inner driveway on the opposite side of the iron bars.
The driver’s side door opened, and a young girl in a yellow dress stepped out, followed by a woman in an elegant, floor-length burgundy gown that looked like it had been tailored for a royal gala.
It was me.
Denise’s jaw dropped. Her face turned an instant shade of crimson as she rushed up to the iron bars, gripping the cold metal with both hands.
"Vivian!" Denise shrieked, her voice cracking with fury. "What are you doing inside the grounds? How did you get past security? Unchain this gate right now! You are ruining your sister's life!"
Kendra ran up beside her mother, her eyes wide with shock and pure rage as she looked at my dress, my composure, and the keys resting in my hand.
"Vivian, stop playing these pathetic, jealous games!" Kendra screamed, her voice echoing across the stalled line of wedding guests. "You can't do this! It's my wedding day!"
I walked slowly up to the iron gate, looking through the bars at the family who had torn up my invitation less than eighteen hours ago.
May you like
"You banned me from the wedding, Denise," I said, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly projected across the driveway. "You said I would embarrass the family."
"So I decided to ensure that no one in this family has to suffer my presence today."
