Chapter 5 - The Audit of False Luxury

The scene outside the locked gates of Aldercrest erupted into pure chaos as Senator Thorne instructed his drivers to turn the family fleet around.

Catering trucks began pulling away, the live string quartet packed up their instruments, and two hundred distinguished guests watched in stunned silence as the Marlowe family’s grand illusion collapsed on the gravel road.

Denise was on her feet, screaming at Spencer’s parents as they drove away, her silk blouse rumpled, her polished hair falling wildly into her face.

"Spencer, wait! It's a misunderstanding! We can explain!" Denise shrieked, running after the departing Bentley until her heels gave out and she stumbled onto the shoulder.

I didn't open the gate. I turned my back on the chaos, walking slowly back toward the terrace where my executive assistant, Sarah, was waiting with a secure digital tablet.

"Miss Marlowe," Sarah said quietly, handing me the interface. "The forensic accounting team has completed the full review of the secondary corporate accounts as requested."

"Show me," I replied.

For three years, I had allowed my family access to a secondary corporate assistance fund under the impression that they were using it for basic living expenses and emergency medical bills.

The live audit revealed a very different story.

Denise had systematically billed over forty thousand dollars in designer clothing, spa packages, and country club dues to the corporate account, claiming they were "administrative consultations."

Kendra had used the business line to lease her sports car, pay for her European vacations, and fund the very social media lifestyle she used to look down on me.

They hadn't just taken my kindness for granted; they had been actively stealing from my company while calling me a failure behind my back.

"Cancel the corporate credit lines immediately, Sarah," I instructed smoothly, handing the tablet back to her. "Issue an immediate legal recall for the vehicle leases, and notify the mortgage board that the automated family subsidy is permanently terminated."

"Right away, CEO Marlowe," Sarah nodded, taking the tablet and executing the commands with a single tap.

I looked back through the distant trees at the front entrance, where my mother was now pounding uselessly against the iron bars, her voice fading into the quiet breeze of the Virginia countryside.

The daughter they had tried to erase was finally done paying for their stage.
