Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Dark

Eleanor stood frozen in the center of the massive master bedroom, the dark silk robe pooling at her feet as the silence of the night pressed against us.
My hands shook violently, my gaze entirely fixed on the dark, uneven mole perfectly visible against her pale collarbone.
The exact same mark.
The one my biological mother, Marianne, had always carried before she vanished into thin air nineteen years ago.
"Travis..." Eleanor whispered, a single, heavy tear cutting through her elegant makeup.
"I am not your mother."
The words hit like a physical blow to my chest, my breath catching sharply in my throat.
"Then why do you have her mark?" I demanded, my voice cracking under the weight of a sudden, suffocating panic.
"Because it isn't a birthmark, Travis," she said, her voice dropping into a register that turned my blood to ice.
"It's a branding."
She stepped closer to the window, the faint red and blue light of the security system washing across her face.
"Nineteen years ago, your father, David, wasn't a simple insurance salesman who lost his wife to a tragic kidnapping."
"He was the primary architect of a multi-million-dollar money laundering network for the Bellini syndicate."
"When the federal authorities began closing in on his accounts, he needed a way to erase his assets and start a new story."
"So he staged your mother’s disappearance, took the hidden cash, and used a corrupt clinic to alter her identity."
I stared at her, the room spinning violently as the foundations of my entire life began to crumble into dust.
"You're saying... my father did this to you?"
"I am saying that nineteen years ago, I was your mother's closest friend, the woman who tried to help her escape his control," Eleanor said quietly.

"But your father caught us before we could reach the state border."
"He gave her a choice: sign the asset transfer forms, or watch him destroy the only son she had ever loved."
